Choices:

The correct answer is (C). Even the best writers sometimes can write confusing sentences. One way in which this happens is when pronouns get confusing, such as in this question. We have here several plural nouns, all of which can be replaced with 'them.' However, if they are all replaced, it becomes the writer's obligation to make sure the reader understands clearly who is being discussed. The error in this question is a pronoun antecedent disagreement, specifically that whom the word 'them' refers to is unclear. Thus, the answer is C.
