Ar·kan·sas River  (är  k  n-sô  , är-k  n z s) KEY - A river of the south-central United States rising in the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado and flowing about 2,333 km (1,450 mi) generally southeastward to the Mississippi River in southeast Arkansas. It was an important trade and travel route in the 19th century.
