American family of journalists, including Robert Wilson Patterson (1850-1910), editor in chief of the Chicago Tribune (1899-1910). His son Joseph Medill Patterson (1879-1946) founded (1919) the New York Daily News, and his daughter Eleanor Medill Patterson (1884-1948) founded (1939) the Washington Times-Herald.
