ETYMOLOGY:
Middle English salet, from Old French sallade, from Old Spanish celada, or Old Italian celata both probably from Latin caelta (cassis), engraved (helmet), feminine past participle of caelre, to engrave, from caelum, chisel; see ka-id- in Indo-European roots
