ETYMOLOGY:
From Sinhalese vandaru, pl. of vandur, monkey, from Sanskrit vnara, forest dweller, monkey, probably from vanar- (as in vanarad-, sitting in the forest), archaic locative of vanam, forest; see wen-1 in Indo-European roots
