Jujuy
(hsymbolhwē´) , city (1991 pop. 182,663), capital of Jujuy prov., NW Argentina, on the Bermejo River. In the scenic foothill region of the E Andes, it is the center of an agricultural, mining, and cattle-raising area. It was in Jujuy that Manuel Belgrano, the patriot general, created the first Argentine national flag. Juan Lavalle, after a futile attempt to depose the caudillo Juan Manuel de Rosas, was killed in Jujuy in 1841. There are interesting native ruins nearby. Jujuy is also known as San Salvador de Jujuy.
