, 1849—1910, Brazilian writer, abolitionist, and diplomat. A parliamentary deputy in imperial times, he was perhaps the strongest single force in bringing about the abolition of slavery (1888). He was prominent under the republic, serving as minister to Great Britain and as ambassador to the United States. A champion of Pan-Americanism, he presided over the Pan-American Conference (1906). He is well known for his literary works, and his autobiography, Minha formacao [my formation] (1900), is a classic of its kind.See biography by his daughter, C.
