Oxnard
 (ŏk´snärd) , city (1990 pop. 142,216), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1903. Its economy, formerly based on agriculture, mining, and nearby military bases, has expanded as the city has grown. Sporting goods, cosmetics, metal products, prepared foods, paper, asphalt, pumps, aircraft parts, building materials, uniforms, computer equipment, and concrete products are manufactured. There is dairying, and avocados, citrus, vegetables, and nursery crops are grown. There are also oil refineries. Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station is nearby. Oxnard is the gateway for visitors to the Santa Barbara Islands and to Los Padres National Forest.
