Waley, Arthur
1889—1966, English orientalist, b. London as Arthur David Schloss, educated at Cambridge. He was and still is considered one of the world's great Asian scholars. His most important works include his translations of Chinese poetry and of the Japanese novel, The Tale of Genji (1925—33) by Murasaki Shikibu. Among his other works are The No Plays of Japan (1921), The Poetry and Career of Li Po (1959) and The Secret History of the Mongols and Other Pieces (1964). He never traveled to Asia.
